Part-2: The last twelve days of 'Writing Wisdom Series'

A 22-day journey to share writing tips that shaped my craft

If you follow me on LinkedIn or Instagram, you may have noticed that I recently started the “Writing Wisdom Series” — a 22-day journey to share the writing tips that shaped my craft.

Last Sunday on Feb 11, I ended the series with all the posts that I wrote. Here, I have curated them as nuggets that I believe is worthy of your time. Happy reading!

Day 11: The Impact of Case Studies📊

Writing case studies offers online creators credibility by showcasing practical experiences, expertise, and strategies. Consider, for instance, Justin Welsh's piece titled 'Optimize Your LinkedIn for 2024,' featured in his newsletter 'The Saturday Solopreneur,' which I subscribe to. Welsh's case study shares insights on optimizing LinkedIn profiles for business growth.

He highlights the platform's value, emphasizing clarity in profile elements like the banner image, profile photo, tagline, and about section. Welsh advises strategically leveraging new features like the Community Top Voice badge and featured section. Through his own journey, Welsh illustrates how a well-crafted profile can significantly impact business success on LinkedIn. Thus with this case study, Justin provided valuable insights for readers seeking actionable tips and real-world examples to improve their LinkedIn game.

Day 12: Balancing Information and Entertainment 🎭

📰 Inform and Engage: Discover the art of balancing informative content with entertainment to keep your readers educated and entertained.

Day 13: The Art of Editing and Proofreading" ✏️

Here are two key tips that I think of:

  1. In "On Writing Well," William Zinsser underscores the importance of editing as the key to clear, concise, and effective writing. He emphasizes the need for ruthless self-editing to eliminate clutter, redundancy, and verbosity from one's prose. Zinsser advocates for simplicity, urging writers to prioritize clarity and coherence over embellishment. His insights underscore the value of meticulous editing in crafting compelling and impactful written communication.

  2. Nicolas Cole argues that editing your work in your first year of writing online is a futile endeavour due to a lack of understanding of what to edit for. He identifies five major editing considerations: grammar, format, style, pace, and idea. Without data-driven insights, beginner writers often rely on assumptions, leading to over-editing. Cole stresses the importance of providing value to readers and suggests that editing should be guided by real-world feedback obtained through publishing. Therefore, he advises novice writers to refrain from excessive editing until they have accumulated sufficient experience and data to make informed decisions.

Day 14: Audience Engagement Strategies 📣

Audience engagement is the cornerstone of successful online writing. It's not just about producing great content; it's about fostering a meaningful connection with your readers who want to keep coming back for more. Successful publications and digital entrepreneurs forge engaging methods to retain their community. Here's a brief dive into some effective strategies:

  1. Firstly, good writing reigns supreme. Whether it's weaving personal anecdotes into your pieces or crafting compelling narratives backed by data, stories with strong writing have the power to resonate with your audience. Emily Atkin's 'Heated', a journalism newsletter on climate change creates an immersive experience that keeps her readers eagerly anticipating each edition.

  2. Secondly, interactivity is key. Engage your audience by inviting them to participate in polls, surveys, or Q&A sessions. The Hustle, a business newsletter, excels at this with its quirky polls and interactive quizzes that encourage reader participation and feedback.

  3. Lastly, consistency breeds loyalty. If you follow all the big-time online writers, they will often tell you the importance of writing consistently. Austin Kleon's weekly newsletter is a shining example with subscribers eagerly awaiting his insightful musings every Friday without fail.

By incorporating these audience engagement strategies into your writing, you can cultivate a loyal following.

Day 15: The Art of Content Promotion 📢

We often think of crafting effective social media strategies to promote our content. However, there's another way to look at it.

In the essay "The Secret To Writing High-Performing Content," Nicolas Cole emphasizes a strategic approach to online writing: playing the numbers game. He advocates for a cycle of creation and evaluation, where writers produce multiple pieces, analyze their performance, and double down on the most successful ones. Cole introduces the concept of the "101 Structure," citing it as an example of a winning formula.

He encourages writers to dissect their breakout hits to understand why they resonated and then replicate that success with variations on the theme. By continually exploiting what works, writers can increase their chances of success and improve their overall performance in the digital realm. Cole underscores the importance of recognizing winning content and capitalizing on it to enhance one's online presence.

Day 16: Effective Email Marketing 💌

In the digital age, building an email subscriber list is paramount for creators like us, echoing sentiments shared by both David Perell and Nicolas Cole. Why? Because email remains the most direct and personal way to connect with our audience. Crafting engaging emails allows us to deliver valuable content directly to our subscribers' inboxes, fostering a deeper relationship and trust. Through email, we can share insights, stories, and exclusive content, nurturing our community and turning casual readers into loyal followers.

Success in email marketing is measured not just by open rates and click-throughs, but by the quality of engagement and the impact on our audience. Are our emails sparking conversations? Are they driving action or inspiring thought? By analyzing metrics like open rates, click-through rates, and conversions, we gain insights into what resonates with our audience, allowing us to refine our approach and continually deliver value. Effective email marketing is about building meaningful connections and providing value to our subscribers, enriching their lives and ours.

Day 17: Leveraging Social Media for Writers 📱

Many believe that a blog or newsletter is a must to embark on a writing journey. Yet, contemporary Internet entrepreneurs such as David Perell or Nicolas Cole opt to share their ideas directly on social media platforms. They leverage the virality and shareability inherent in these channels to expand their audience base. Thus it's essential to build a strong online presence through platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. Understand how social media can contribute to the growth of your audience and subscribers, and the strategies to achieve it.

Day 18: Building a Loyal Community🤝

Building a loyal community is the cornerstone of success for any creator. It's not just about amassing followers; it's about fostering genuine connections and mutual support. To cultivate such a community, authenticity is key. Share your journey, struggles, and triumphs openly, inviting others to do the same. Actively engage with your audience by responding to comments, hosting Q&A sessions, and acknowledging their contributions.

Consistency is crucial; show up regularly with valuable content that resonates with your audience's interests and concerns. Encourage collaboration and participation, making members feel like valued contributors rather than passive spectators. Foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie by creating spaces for interaction, whether through online forums, social media groups, or virtual events. By prioritizing authenticity, engagement, consistency, and inclusivity, you can nurture a loyal community that not only supports your work but also enriches your creative journey.

Day 19: Effective Monetization Strategies💰

For first-time online writers, developing effective monetization strategies is essential to sustain their passion and turn their craft into a viable career.

One approach is to leverage multiple revenue streams, diversifying income sources to reduce reliance on any single channel. This might include offering digital products, such as e-books or online courses, monetizing through affiliate marketing, or providing premium content through subscription models.

Another strategy is to cultivate a loyal audience through authentic engagement and valuable content, thereby increasing the potential for revenue generation through sponsorships, brand partnerships, and crowdfunding campaigns. It's crucial to prioritize audience needs and preferences while exploring monetization avenues, ensuring that strategies align with your brand and mission.

Day 20: The Art of Content Repurposing🔄

I love the insights offered by Nicolas Cole in his essay "The Ultimate Guide To Repurposing Twitter Content On LinkedIn". He speaks on the evolution of social media platforms. Cole says it has transformed them into potent content distribution channels, facilitating audience engagement and reach expansion. Repurposing content from one platform to another emerges as a strategic approach to doubling audience growth and exposure. The essay points out:

  1. Leveraging analytics to identify top-performing content provides valuable insights for optimizing format and enhancing readability across platforms.

  2. Techniques such as adapting content formats for different platforms, utilizing line breaks, and employing formatting tactics ensure content resonance and engagement.

  3. Experimenting with various content formats, including images and text-based posts, allows for the exploration of audience preferences and algorithmic dynamics across platforms.

  4. Balancing republishing cadence, ideally once or twice a day, ensures consistent visibility without overwhelming the audience, fostering sustained engagement and growth.

  5. Maintaining a consistent republishing schedule fosters long-term audience growth and sustained engagement, positioning content creators for enduring success in expanding their online presence across diverse social media platforms.

Day 21 : Inspiration from Successful Writers🌟

As budding artistes, we want to be like our favourite writers. It's natural and obvious to feel this way.

David Perell, in his piece "Imitate, Then Innovate" advocates for writers to embrace imitation as a strategy for improvement. He suggests binge-reading favourite writers and copying their styles shamelessly. Notably, writers like Hunter S. Thompson and Robert Louis Stevenson have employed similar techniques, even going as far as hand-copying entire novels. Perell himself mimics admired authors in his articles, replicating their rhythms and cadences.

David writes, "Instead of trying to be original, mirror others so intensely that the glitter of their brilliance shines upon your craft. It’s the closest you can get to a conversation with the artist. Aim for perfection but pay attention to your mistakes, for they hold the seeds of your individuality."

FINAL Day 22: Core Writing Principles for the Journey Ahead 🚀

  • 🔄 Consistency is Key: Commit to writing every day, even if it's just a few sentences. Consistent practice builds momentum and hones your craft over time.

  • 🤖 Harness the Power of Generative AI: Integrate AI writing tools into your creative process to unlock new levels of inspiration and productivity. Embrace these tools as assistants, not replacements, to enhance your writing prowess. Experiment with AI-generated prompts, brainstorming tools, and language models to spark creativity, overcome writer's block, and explore new narrative possibilities.

  • 📚 Read Widely and Often: Immerse yourself in diverse genres, styles, and voices. Reading expands your vocabulary, sparks creativity, and exposes you to different writing techniques.

  • 🗣️ Find Your Voice: Experiment with different tones, styles, and perspectives until you discover what feels authentic to you. Your unique voice is your greatest asset as a writer.

  • Treat Writing Seriously: Approach writing with the same discipline and dedication as any other profession. Set goals, create deadlines, and hold yourself accountable for your craft.

  • ✂️ Edit Ruthlessly: Revision is where the magic happens. Be willing to cut, rearrange, and refine your work until it shines. Great writing is often the result of meticulous editing.

  • 🔄 Embrace Feedback: Seek out constructive criticism from peers, mentors, and readers. Feedback helps you identify blind spots, strengthen weaknesses, and grow as a writer.

  • 🌐 Build Your Platform: Establish an online presence through blogging, social media, or newsletters. Building a platform amplifies your voice, expands your audience, and opens up new opportunities.

  • 🤝 Network with Purpose: Connect with fellow writers, editors, and industry professionals. Networking can lead to collaborations, mentorship, and invaluable career advice.

  • 🧠 Stay Curious and Humble: Writing is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. Stay humble, stay hungry, and never stop exploring new ideas, techniques, and perspectives.
